Morning yoga might sound relaxing but this isn’t the lying-around-and-stretching type of yoga. It’s hot, fast, and challenging. I always feel good when it’s over but I still find myself tempted to ditch it and head back to my cozy desk and a second cup of coffee almost every week.
As I was rushing off after drop off last week, a friend asked me where I was going. “Yoga,” I said. “Even though I don’t really feel like it!”
“Ah,” she shouted after me. “You’re doing it for future Janet. Good for you.”
In the moment I chuckled, agreed, and went on my way. But I found myself thinking about her words once I was back at my desk later that day. If you think about it, there are so many things we put off, or justify not doing because we don’t want to do them in them moment. But – as my friend so wisely pointed out – they almost always yield major benefit in the long run.
For me, that Wednesday yoga class falls squarely into this category — and, for most of us, so does WRITING. So many of us (myself included) put off important writing tasks simply because in the moment we’d rather do something else. Something more satisfying; less challenging.
The inconvenient truth lies in the cumulative effect of this habit. Skipping one blog post (or yoga class) here and there isn’t a big deal. But if you do it half the time – or even a quarter of the time – your success will be majorly impacted.
So my friends, the next time you’re faced with the choice of whether to write that blog post on your to-do or postponing it so you can do something that feels more desirable in that moment, I strongly urge you to do it anyways – for your future self and business.
I’m willing to bet you’ll be glad you did it – and that the effort will pay off in spades down the road.
